CASTROL
ON DATA CENTRE MODEL

At the start of 2023 we were approached by ‘Castrol On’, to conceive and build a model to demonstrate their new ‘e-thermal cooling fluid’, it’s properties, and it’s advantages over competitor products. The model had the challenge of educating investors and potential customers in simple terms about the growing issue of wasted heat in electronics, and Castrol’s new solution to this problem in a visual manner. The model also needed to be easily portable for various shows and exhibitions, easy to operate, battery powered, and of course; visually engaging!

With the ever-increasing demands on computing, battery technology, processing, and data centers, the performance of thermal management systems have needed to adapt to keep up. To meet this performance increase Castrol’s E-thermal fluid has the ability to dissipate waste heat energy much faster and more efficiently than conventional water-cooled systems, thereby enhancing computing performance and preventing overheating.

To tackle the challenge the Designworks team set about concepting a range of solutions that would demonstrate the technology through the use of eye-catching LED animations and premium materials that would complement Castrol’s branding.

The final concept is analogous to a traditional computer heat sink with two coolant tubes running through it’s cross-section. Highlighting the differences between the new technology and conventional cooling systems in simplest terms. Over a fourty five second period LED’s within the model show heat escaping at different rates from either side of the system.

With our years of experience producing exhibition models, we were able to quickly validate the concept using maquettes and test rigs before fabricating the various parts and coding the embedded software.
